BOSTON HARBOR & SOUTH SHORE-Stripers 7/30/2008
Offshore on Stellwagen Bank, school bluefin are being trolled up, and the first giant blue fin have been baited. On Saturday the 26th, B-Fast’s FOUR SONS landed their first giant at 750 pounds using live bluefish. In shore, in the harbors, coves and inner-harbors bays stripers are feeding on silversides and juvenile herring. Occasional blitzes, especially on the out-going tide, occurred as these bait fish poured out of the harbor giving top-water fly and light-tackle fishers great action. More really big bass are to be had inshore in the coming weeks as the giants drive the bass off the sand eels on the bank.
Friday, Bruce Booth and friend Mike Dennis from Wellesley had a great morning fish in Boston’s inshore water for stripers. Bruce, an ardent fly fisher, hooked his fish casting chartreuse Half & Half’s on 400 grain DepthCharge line using the long rod, while Mike raised his bass with Texas-rigged, soft-plastic surface presentations on light-spinning gear. Numerous school-sized bass to 27 inches were brought to boat-side and released. Mike landed his keeper bass of 33”, 12#. In a brief flurry both anglers doubled-up, and Mike was tied into a really big bass. Before Bruce could bring his 26” bass to boat-side, “Walter”, on Mike’s line, had dumped half the line off his reel and was still going. Unfortunately, not giving chase with the boat immediately, cost Mike his trophy; my mistake. Typically, fish like Mike’s in the 40”+ size class need to be followed to prevent the line from tangling with bottom structure and the drag needs to be reduced on light-tackle. None-the-less, both anglers are hooked and vowed to return for a re-match with one of Walter’s cousins.
Saturday, long-time client Roger Thuot from Petersham, MA had to work hard for his fish. The morning ebb brought good surface action of the harbor entrance at Deer Island. Most of the bass were in the 24-26” size class, and were hooked using soft-plastics. Moving to the inner-harbor bays produced Rogers’s 32” keeper. On the return run to Cohasset, we fished the rocks with very little action. In the next few weeks, the South Shore and the outer harbor should turn on with the return of the peanut-bunker.
